Self-Publishing Article by Ashley Emma

Have you ever thought of writing an eBook? Writing eBooks is a great way to make some extra income. More reasons why you should write an eBook: You could use an eBook (or several) as a free incentive for people to sign up for your email list on your website or blog. If you do this, you can also self-publish the eBook and still make money on it that way. You can also give away eBooks to subscribers that aren’t sold anywhere else, which will make it an even bigger incentive for them to sign up since it is exclusive! An email list is invaluable, because unlike Twitter followers or Facebook likes, you actually own your email list, and no one can take it away from you or start charging you for it. An email list allows you to send updates and ask your subscribers what type of product they’d like so you can sell it to them, such as more eBooks or a video series, or even a course. Basically, once you have this group of readers, you can start making money by selling them what they actually want. For more information on building an email list, I recommend the course Rapid List Building by Bryan Harris. He teaches you everything you need to know to build a large list of subscribers. You could write a book in an area that you are already an expert in to publicly establish yourself as an expert in that certain field or genre. I have an eBook called Legit Work at Home Jobs that I give away to people who join my email list on my website http://www.ashleyemmaauthor.com, and I write about all the different ways I tried to work at home before I succeeded. I wrote about Proofread Anywhere and how I proofread and edit books from home, and people love this eBook! People seem to always want to make more money, especially from home, and I got so many questions about how I make money from home that I decided to write that eBook. You could write about your own area of expertise. You do not need a college degree to write a book. Honestly, I think some writing skills can’t be taught. You either love writing or you don’t, and your passion will be clear through your work. If you love writing and have a lot of determination, you have all the skills you need! Have you traveled a lot or had other life experiences that other people might want to learn more about? I have sold more copies of Ashley’s Amish Adventures than any of my other books because people are just dying to know what it was like to live with the Amish. Have you done something that people would be curious about that is unique? Now, on to marketing your book after self-publishing it on Amazon or other book retailers so you make a passive income. There are certain ways to market your book so that it sells enough copies to give you a substantial amount of royalties. Many people think they can just write a book, self-publish it on Amazon, and the readers will automatically find your book just because it is there. That is not the case. Believe me, I did that for years. I wrote several books and self-published them on Amazon, wondering why I was only making a hundred or so dollars a year. A year! Now I know how to market my books and make a substantial income from them. There are many, many courses out there that promise to teach you how to sell more copies of your books so you can make more money, and I’ve tried many of them. Some of them are good, but with some, I felt like I just wasn’t learning anything new because they were more focused on the actual writing aspect, and I already knew how to do that. I wanted to know how to sell my book successfully and make money on it. Traditional Publishing Traditional publishing is also an option, and that is the route I pursued after self-publishing a few books. But it is an extremely lengthy process and, honestly, there is a slim chance your work will be chosen by a publisher. I did have an agent interested me for a while, but because they are extremely busy people, they may take several months to look at your submission and actually send it to a publisher. The publisher then could take several months to let you know they want your book and take several more months for them to produce it. And once you are published, you must pay your agent a percentage of your royalties if you have one. Usually publishers will pay you a small percentage of royalties, and then you will have to pay your agent around 15%. On Amazon.com you get 35% or 70% of the book sales (depending on how much you charge) and you get to keep all of it. On the other hand, you have to pay for all your own marketing, editing, and cover design, so there are pros and cons. In my opinion, self-publishing gives you an ROI (return on investment) pretty quickly when you do it right. I made back all the money I spent on my first book with my first royalty payment. You can submit to publishers who do not require agents, but many of these are smaller publishing houses that do not always have the funds to promote your book enough to sell nearly as many copies as a larger publishing house that requires authors to have agents. I received a publishing contract offer from a smaller publisher and my agent advised me to turn it down, saying I would spend more money on promoting my book than I would make. I just couldn’t do that. If you want to learn more about publishers who do not require agents, subscribe to the email newsletter for

What was it like to judge a writing contest?

This summer I was a judge for Becoming Writer’s 5th Anniversary Writing Contest. It was SO much harder than I thought it was going to be! Also extremely time consuming. But so fun and it was a wonderful experience! My bio is listed on this page as one of the judges: http://thewritepractice.com/anniversary-contest-winners/ The first week we each had to read 80 stories and pick our top ten with our partner judges. That turned into a list of 40, which we read the next week. We then picked our top 10 from that, then that turned into a list of the overall top 15. We then picked our favorite 5, rated from best to worst. THAT was hard because I loved all of my top 5! Then we all voted. Through all of that, we had to leave feedback on the stories because most people paid extra for judges’ feedback. I also liked to do it anyway to use as notes that I could refer to later if I couldn’t remember what I liked or disliked about a certain story. In the end it was extremely hard to narrow it down to just 10 and then 5. There were about 20 that I thought could be winners. Only one made me cry, and some of them just astounded me with their incredible writing. Some that were on the top 10 list I did not think deserved to be there, but all of the 8 judges had different perspectives, so it was good that there were a bunch of us. I’m really glad I got to do this, but it did take up a lot of my time for several weeks. I am so glad I got to see what goes on behind the scenes of a writing contest and how much work the judges put in. I was fortunate to see what judges look for in a winning short story and why certain ones were not picked, and why some were rated higher than others. It was truly incredible how it all came together. The most valuable lesson I learned was that you should not be discouraged if you do not win a writing contest. Just because you don’t win doesn’t mean you’re not excellent. There were so many excellent stories I wanted to put through to the next round but I could only pick a few. Sometimes judges are looking for certain things in a story, and sometimes our personal opinions might get in the way. We are only human too.  A judge might choose a story over another because of its storyline or theme, not because the writing was actually better than the other. Keep trying. The best stories eventually do rise to the top!

My new favorite author!!

Stacy Claflin is my absolute new favorite author. I just can’t get enough of her books, especially her suspense and clean romance books! I LOVED the Gone series and read them all in just a few days on vacation. Her writing is very addicting! I also enjoyed the Bayside and Seaside series. She writes in several genres, so you’ll probably find something you love. She has a ton of great resources for writers on her website, too. Check it out: http://stacyclaflin.com/books/

When I lived With the Amish

Ever wondered what it would be like to live with the Amish? When I tell people I lived with the Amish as part of my research for writing my Amish books, they usually ask me, “Are you Amish?” Well, no, it should be obvious. Bonnets are not my thing. But people are usually uneducated about the Amish, which is a shame, because they are such fascinating people to learn about. However, the Amish are extremely admirable people! These are my favorite things about the Amish that I totally agree with: They have a strong sense of community. They help each other in huge ways, like building a barn for one of the families or helping pay each other’s medical bill. No questions asked. They never expect anything in return. They are smart about dating. People ask me often if they marry young, and they usually don’t marry that young. It is common for Amish newlyweds to be in their mid-twenties. They don’t rush into marriage. They take dating very seriously and have no physical contact. That is smart! That is why it doesn’t take them years and years to find a spouse. They are hard workers but they know how to have fun. Family time is priority. They don’t clutter their lives with TV or silly things that don’t matter, so they fill the spaces with good relationships and time with God. Their simple lives are wonderfully full. Their faith in God is so strong! They always trust in God. I will cover things I do not agree with about the Amish in my next post. More about me

My name is Ashley. I have a passion for words, and I’ve heard many times that I am very ambitious. I started making books as soon as I learned how to write and wrote my first novel at age 14, self-publishing it at age 16. I completed 8 manuscripts before the age of 24, and also was offered my first book contract at age 24. I always knew I wanted to be a novelist, and I worked hard for years to achieve this goal. And now, it has really paid off. I live in the country in Maine with my husband and baby girl, right down the road from a farm. For more about me and my accomplishments, please see the My Books section. Feel free to take a look around this site, and let me know if you have any questions at all. See the What I Can Do For You section to see what services I offer and my affordable rates. A few more interesting facts: I also used to be a full-time book editor (now I’m too busy publishing and writing so most of the time I send my client’s editing to my fabulous editor) and I have a certificate from Proofread Anywhere. I’ve also been a finalist in writing contests. Amish Under Fire was a Top 55 Semi Finalist in the Harlequin SYTYCW contest 2015. Undercover Amish was a finalist in the Maine Romance Writers Contest in 2015 with 26 out of 27 points. Thanks for stopping by! Email me at amishbookwriter@gmail.com and I would be happy to chat with you. See the My Amish Photographs section to see more of my Amish pictures from Unity, ME and Lancaster County, ME. And here are photos of my hilarious daughter, Sophia!
